Johnny Depp Steps Into Aerosmith’s Hollywood Bowl Comeback
Joe Perry had a familiar guitarist to introduce during Aerosmith’s October 29, 2026, set at the Hollywood Bowl. Johnny Depp, his bandmate in Hollywood Vampires, walked out with a guitar and joined Aerosmith for “Train Kept A-Rollin’.” Behind them, Dave Grohl was still on drums.
The appearance came on the opening night of California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends. The two-date event marked Aerosmith’s return to full concerts after a gap stretching back to 2023, when Steven Tyler’s vocal injury cut short the band’s farewell tour.
Depp and Perry had shared stages before in Hollywood Vampires, the group they formed with Alice Cooper. At the Bowl, that connection gave Perry a natural guest for a number that leaves plenty of room for guitar interplay.
Aerosmith recorded its version of “Train Kept A-Rollin’” for Get Your Wings in 1974. The song was already a rock-and-roll standard by then. In the Bowl footage, the rhythm carries the musicians through each exchange, even as the camera moves among Tyler, Perry and Depp.
The song followed “Dream On,” with Tyler returning from the piano-led ballad to a guitar-heavy number. Grohl stayed behind the kit through the transition. The closing “Walk This Way” then brought Joey Kramer and John Douglas onto drums.
The audience recording below shows Depp joining the lineup and staying close to the central riff. Look for the way Perry and Depp make room for Tyler as he comes back to the microphone.
The rest of the set put the cameo in perspective. Aerosmith opened with “Toys in the Attic” and “Back in the Saddle” before settling into the layered groove of “Sweet Emotion.” Those choices gave the guest appearance a place inside a compact set that worked through several different sides of the band.
The two recordings below capture the lead-up to Depp’s entrance. “Sweet Emotion” gives Grohl and the guitarists a groove to sit in, while “Dream On” slows the room down before the band turns back to the riff.
