Aimee Mann Nearly Ignored Geddy Lee’s Invitation — But Her Emotional Return With Rush Became One of the Highlights of the Reunion Tour
Aimee Mann made a memorable appearance during the opening run of Rush’s Fifty Something reunion tour, joining the band for “Time Stand Still” at all four Los Angeles shows.

While Mann’s voice has been part of the beloved 1987 track for nearly four decades, these concerts marked the first time she had ever performed the song live with Rush. As it turns out, the reunion almost never happened.

In a heartfelt comic strip shared on Instagram, Mann explained that she received an email from Geddy Lee back in March inviting her to join the tour. At the time, however, she was struggling personally and found it difficult to even respond. “Way back in March, I got an email from Geddy Lee, from the band Rush,” she wrote. “But I was quite frankly in a sh—y place and couldn’t imagine doing it. I was in such a hole I couldn’t even answer one way or the other. I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t try. They were so kind and welcoming. I felt protected by their bubble of music and Canadian warmth, and buoyed aloft by their fans.”

The post quickly resonated with fans and even caught the attention of Alex Lifeson, who left a touching message in the comments. “I looked over at you each night and you looked radiant and assured with each passing moment at your mic,” the guitarist wrote. “You were magic.”

What began as an invitation Mann nearly ignored ultimately became one of the most emotional highlights of Rush’s reunion. Her performances of “Time Stand Still” earned standing ovations throughout the Los Angeles residency and provided fans with a rare full-circle moment nearly 40 years in the making.
Rush will resume the Fifty Something tour on June 18 in Mexico City before continuing across North America with multiple-night stands in cities including Chicago, New York, Toronto, and Boston. The North American run is expected to conclude in December, with international dates planned for 2027.
