Deep Purple’s “Guilt Trippin’” Proves Ian Gillan Still Has Fire at 80

Deep Purple have unveiled their explosive new single, “Guilt Trippin’,” and the track is already turning heads thanks to a remarkable vocal performance from Ian Gillan. At 80 years old, the legendary frontman delivers the kind of raw energy that has defined his career for more than five decades.

According to Gillan, the song began in the most spontaneous way possible.

“The song starts, and I’m in the studio. I don’t have any words for it yet. So I just start screaming. It was the pure joy of yelling it,” he explained. “I vowed when I was 40 that I’d stop screaming by the time I was 60. Now I’m looking back and thinking, ‘Whatever happened to that?’ So we’ll give it a go.”

The song’s concept is just as unusual as its vocal performance. “Guilt Trippin’” imagines God and Charles Darwin sitting together in a pub, sharing a pint while reflecting on the state of humanity and how things on Earth have unfolded. The unusual premise gives the track a playful edge while still touching on bigger questions about society, belief, and human nature.

Released as the latest preview of Deep Purple’s upcoming album Splat!, the song showcases the chemistry the band continues to share after decades together. Produced by longtime collaborator Bob Ezrin, the record highlights a group that remains creative and adventurous despite its legendary status.

For many listeners, however, “Guilt Trippin’” belongs to Gillan. His voice still carries the grit, power, and unpredictability that made him one of rock’s most distinctive singers. More than half a century after helping shape hard rock history, he continues to find new ways to surprise audiences.

One thing is certain: Ian Gillan may have once planned to stop screaming, but at 80 years old, he is still proving exactly why he remains one of rock’s greatest voices. 🤘🎤
