Anika Nilles Honors Neil Peart After Emotional First Rush Concert

Anika Nilles has shared an emotional reaction after playing her first concert with Rush, revealing that Neil Peart’s presence was felt on stage through a quiet but powerful tribute placed beside her drum kit.

Rush launched their Fifty Something Tour at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, marking the band’s long-awaited return to the stage with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson leading a new live chapter. For fans, it was never going to be an ordinary comeback. The night carried the weight of history, memory, and the absence of Neil Peart, whose legacy remains inseparable from Rush’s sound.

Nilles faced one of the most difficult roles in rock music: stepping behind a drum kit forever associated with one of the greatest drummers of all time. But instead of trying to erase that shadow, she appeared to carry it with respect. Her performance quickly became one of the night’s most discussed moments, especially during “Tom Sawyer,” where the crowd responded with loud cheers as she handled the song’s demanding parts with confidence and control.

After the show, Nilles posted several photos from the concert and admitted how overwhelmed she still felt by the experience. She wrote: “I’m still trying to wrap my head around what happened last night! 🙏🏼🫶🏻”

The most moving part of her post came in the final image. It showed a pair of ProMark Neil Peart Signature 747 Oak Drumsticks placed beside her kit, with the caption: “Neil was with us on this drum riser last night”

For many Rush fans, that small tribute said everything. Nilles was not simply taking over a position. She was stepping into a sacred space in the band’s history, while making it clear that Peart’s spirit, influence, and memory remained part of the performance.

The opening night of the tour became more than a comeback show. It was a celebration of Rush’s past, a test of its future, and a reminder that Neil Peart’s presence still lives inside every rhythm, every lyric, and every fan who came to hear those songs again.
